October Wrap Up – Month in Review!

Muay Thai

Oct 9

October was a big month for Ironfist! Our promising Muay Thai fighters Rocco and Finn kicked things off on October 9, jumping over the ropes to compete on Muay Thai League down on the Gold Coast at the Carrara Indoor Stadium.

On the day show, Rocco fought for The Siam Cup QLD Title against Lane Moody from DF Gym up in Cairns. Although Rocco didn’t come away with the win, he showed huge improvements in his performance and mindset going into the bout. Without a doubt, this was a promising milestone in his development as a martial artist. Rocco and Lane were awarded Fight of the Day by the Muay Thai League team. Well done Rocco!

Finn Coleman had a tough matchup later that night against Luca Camilleri from Levels Fight and Fitness in Burleigh Heads, securing the win via unanimous decision. His opponent brought the best out of Finn who displayed real talent. The experience Finn absorbed from the fight will serve him well moving forward.

We hosted our first Development Sparring Day at the Ironfist gym, welcoming well over 70 participants.

Everyone who attended the sparring session nominated to one of three experience levels: beginner/novice, intermediate/advanced, and fighters only. We had eight designated sparring areas set up, each with their own referee who kept a close eye on the participants to ensure each spar was safe and productive.

The aim of these development days is to simulate some of the pressure of a real fight, while still being safe and refraining from full contact. If you have not participated in an event like this before, we highly recommend trying it. The improvements that you will see carry over into your future training will surprise you.

Overall, we were extremely pleased with how the day went. There were no egos, and everyone demonstrated great control. We will definitely be hosting more next year, with dates to be announced.

We capped the month off with a bang at Destiny 17, at the Mansfield Tavern. Sean “Man o’ War” Worland came away with a draw against tough competition in Jimmy O’Brien from Hell Raiser Combat Centre on the Sunshine Coast. Sean has continued to show great progression with each fight and will no doubt be back in the ring before too long. Good job Sean!

Cassie “Salty” Barnes added another dominant win to her undefeated record, fighting for the Destiny Bantamweight Championship title against Miranda Star from Intense Muay Thai in Cairns. The fight was stopped by the doctor in the second round, putting a stamp on Cassie’s 9th consecutive win. Cassie now holds two Muay Thai titles!

Joshua “Fuzzy Wuzzy” Lester was also matched on Destiny, but was unfortunately not able to compete due to illness. We all wish Josh a speedy recovery and hope to see him back in the ring very soon.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

There were no BJJ competitions this month unfortunately, but we are looking forward to our first Ironfist MMA fighter stepping in the cage next month. Isaac “The Pool Boy” Small has been primed and ready for the last few months, however due to a number of cancelations and pull-outs he has been kept on the waiting list. Isaac is looking to put his BJJ and striking skills to the test come November 20 on Eternal MMA 63 at Southport Sharks.

Boxing

Our boxing community is growing in numbers every week. 2022 will hopefully see some of our competitive boxers representing Ironfist in the ring for the first time. Stay tuned!

We held our very first Sound Bath at Ironfist a few weeks ago, hosted by the amazing and talented Cyndy Bui. This was a free event for our Ironfist community. Cyndy’s Sound Bath was a first for many who attended, but the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Thank you for the enjoyable and relaxing night, Cyndy!

Starting November 7, for the next four Sundays we will be introducing a new class to our timetable, Yoga Stretch, headed by Cyndy. This hour-long relaxation class, starting from 4pm, will take participants through the ins-and-outs of yoga stretching. Everyone is encouraged to come and give it a go; it will be a great reset for each week ahead.

Yoga Stretch will be added to our timetable permanently, beginning January next year.
